Suzanne and Karl on race dayChicago Marathon
Suzanne and Karl Holliman (pictured left) ran the La Salle Bank Chicago Marathon in October 2007 to raise funds for VETAID.  Between them they raised a magnificent £2,284.

The marathon was an exceptionally difficult one, with abnormal weather conditions of 90 degree heat and 70% humidity, combined with an underestimated water supply for the runners.  Despite these difficulties, the couple felt their efforts were very worthwhile:

“We chose to run for VETAID as we both studied veterinary medicine at Edinburgh and became aware of the charity at this time," explained Suzanne, "Once we entered the marathon and decided to raise money for charity, VETAID was the obvious choice, as we wanted to help people in Africa and the veterinary component of promoting animal welfare and therefore improving the lives of the people was a key element.”

Harvest festival at Ford SchoolFord School’s Harvest Festival Raffle
In October, Ford School near Berwick upon Tweed had their Harvest Festival and held a raffle to raise money for VETAID. 22 pupils, aged between 6 and 9, told their parents, friends and relations about the problems of climate change and its effect on poor farmers in Africa.

The pupils sold raffle tickets for a wonderful hamper full of food goodies which they had donated. One mother was thrilled to win it.

As Mary Barber, a teacher at the school explained: “The children were keen to raise money to help others because VETAID’s Development Education Manager, Sarah, had been to talk to them previously. They were so successful that they raised £66.40.”

John McGillivray in training for the challenge!Cape Epic cycle ride
In March 2007, two vets, John McGillivray (pictured right) and Martin James, completed the Cape Epic cycle race in South Africa.  The race is said to be the toughest mountain bike endurance race in the world with 885km of off-road adventure and 15,050m of climbing (nearly twice the height of Mount Everest!).

They finished in 158th place, in a time of 49 hours and 19 minutes, raising over £6,000 for VETAID.
