Camel

Ever tried camel’s milk caramel?
The ‘Humpmobile’: ultimate desert conveyance, immune to drought and sandstorm, cheaper and more reliable than a 4x4 and better at retaining value. Pastoral nomads, who exist by following the sparse rain through Ethiopia, Somalia and Somaliland, depend on camels as mobile storehouses of muscle, transport, wealth and milk. And with the right pan and cooler, surplus camel milk can be turned into saleable cheese or even caramel toffee (anxious to try it? We can supply the recipe).

Paravet Training

Bring animal welfare to African villages
Rural communities in Somaliland, Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania are dependent on their livestock. Help the prosperity of rural communities by training and equipping a ‘para-vet’ (Community Animal Health Worker) who can spread expertise across rural villages and ensure the welfare of cows, sheep, goats, donkeys and chickens. The costs: training a para-vet £250; his bagful of medicines £45.

Two Goat Dowry.

The orphan's dowry

Extended African families, often very poor themselves, take in orphans. Help the orphans become a gain not a drain: give a 2-goat dowry (at a cost of only £30) that remains as long as the orphan stays with the family. The gain? Milk for everyone, and the opportunity to build up a herd of goats. In conditions unsuitable for goats, the dowry could be chickens (£30) or bees (£30).
