Drought in the Horn of Africa
5 August 2006

Drought in SomaliaVETAID’s response to the increasingly frequent drought in the Greater Horn of Africa is to provide appropriate emergency aid to vulnerable livestock-keeping communities in affected countries. The aim is to protect the livestock asset base of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities as much as possible during the emergency situation to allow them to resume their livelihoods when the crisis eases.

VETAIDreceived funding from FAO/ECHO to restock destitute pastoralist families who lost their livestock as a result of the drought. In collaboration with local communities, we distributed 3,000 small ruminants and 150 dairy/pack camels to 200 destitute families living in Ainaba and Garadag of Sool and Sanag regions, respectively (both identified by the Food Security Analysis Unit as so-called ‘red spot’ areas).

VETAID also provided emergency veterinary treatments in the districts of Kitui, Makueni and Machakos of Ukambani region, Kenya, another area severely affected by the drought. This work formed part of the CERF project, coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the UN and covered all of the Arid and Semi Arid districts of Kenya.
