Camel milk project aids survival in Somalia
30 August 2006

VETAID Pastoral Dairy Development Project, SomalilandVETAID was recently awarded a grant from the EC to run a 2 year Pastoral Dairy Development Project aimed at strengthening livelihoods, especially the food security of nomadic pastoralists in marginal rural areas of Somalia.

Working in partnership with VSF Germany, the project will increase the income of almost 50,000 beneficiaries through the marketing of better quality fresh milk and the production and marketing of storable milk products such as cheese and sweets. This will be achieved through improved milk handling, collection and transport practices. With the improvement of freshness, quality and accessibility to markets pastoralists will benefit through higher, diversified and more stable cash incomes and improved food security.
