Livestock Emergency Intervention to Mitigate Food Crisis in Somalia (Leisom)

The purpose of this project is to reduce the negative effect that soaring food prices have on pastoralists and agro-pastoralists. Somalia continues to be affected by civil war and waves of violence. Droughts, floods, disease outbreaks and economic instability effects the poor, who pursue livestock-dependent livelihoods. This results in high rates of malnutrition and long-term lose of assets and livelihoods. Livestock is the mainstay of the Somali economy, so proper and timely delivery of animal health services can reduce production losses.

Main project activities:

  • Vaccinate sheep and goats against major epidemic diseases.
  • Provide animal healthcare services involving treatments against other endemic diseases.
  • Develop a rehabilitation plan for livestock marketing
  • Improve the milk marketing chain on a village level by giving training on hygiene and providing hygienic milk cans.

The project will better preserve the most important productive assets and thus increase the incomes and enhance their resilience of poorer Somali farmers.
