Strengthening Livelihoods through Natural Resource Management Capacity Building in Puntland

The overall objective of this project is to alleviate poverty among vulnerable rural households in Quardho, Dhahar, Huddun and Taleh districts leading to a more peaceful, equitable and democratic society.  Livelihoods will be strengthened and food insecurity reduced for an estimated 14,000 pastoralists through community driven resource management  which will boost agricultural and livestock production and improve access to water.

Loss of livestock – the key livelihood asset - due to cliVillage of Talehmate change has forced vulnerable people to engage in damaging survival strategies which have devastating environmental results. This impacts grazing and water availability and pastoralists also have limited access to animal health services.

The project supports the community through the following activities:

  • rehabilitation of forests and rangelands through erosion control.
  • management of grazing reserves.
  • fodder production.
  • establishing surface water dams for livestock and ‘berkads’ (cemented sub-surface water reservoirs) for human consumption.
  • access to animal health services through 64 Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs).

Income generation will be supported by strengthening the production and marketing of fodder and fresh milk, and training in basic business skills.  Livestock health services will be improved through training CAHWs and herders the the involvement of Puntland United Livestock Professionals (PULP) and private vets.
