City Farm: Global Farm

Farmer's Helpers hard at work at Gorgie City Farm, EdinburghCity Farm: Global Farm is an exciting new project developed in partnership with Edinburgh’s Gorgie City Farm.

The partnership aims to maximise young peoples’ awareness of how important farming is both locally and globally. There will be a particular focus on developing understanding of the role that individuals can play, raising awareness of the impact their choices can have.

During the school holidays, young people aged 8 to 12 years volunteer at the farm as Farmer’s Helpers. This is hard work! The youngsters get fully involved with the work of the farm, mucking out and feeding the animals. VETAID staff have been working with participants to give them a taste of what life is like for other farmers across the world.

Workshops include a role-play farming game where the participants trade cows and come across challenges such as: “What crops should they grow?” “Do they have enough money to educate their kids?” and “Should they borrow money?” Another workshop focuses on where food comes from, how it’s transported and if it’s fairly traded.

The project works with young people visiting the farm independently or with their school. It also engages with teachers, encouraging them to maximise their use of the farm as an education resource.
